India imported a record 1.1 million tonnes of soybean in the 2025–26 marketing season, compared with roughly 2,000 tonnes a season earlier. Costlier domestic soybean pushed processors towards cheaper foreign supplies, and Niger became the biggest reported source with shipments above 430,000 tonnes. Because India allows only non-genetically modified (non-GM) soybean imports, the pool of eligible suppliers is limited. The Soybean Processors Association of India (SOPA) said soymeal exports roughly halved to about 1 million tonnes in 2025–26. A Kharif oilseed, soybean (Glycine max) yields edible oil, protein-rich soymeal that goes into animal feed, and various foods.
