India is set to construct its first riverine lighthouses, which will come up on the Brahmaputra River along National Waterway-2. Until now, India's lighthouses have stood along the sea coast to guide ships; these new structures will instead serve vessels moving on an inland river route. National Waterway-2 follows the course of the Brahmaputra, and placing lighthouses on it is intended to support safer navigation for river traffic on this important inland waterway in the North-East.
