The Lok Sabha approved the Bankers' Books Evidence Bill, 2026 by voice vote on 5 August 2026. The legislation will replace the Bankers' Books Evidence Act, 1891, a law framed during the colonial era. The present Act permits certified copies of bank records such as ledgers, cash books and account books to be produced as evidence in legal proceedings. The new Bill modernises this framework to suit current banking practices, especially electronic records, and lays down how bank records may be used as evidence before courts and in other legal proceedings.
