Save
Bengali novelist and short-story writer Saratchandra Chattopadhyay was remembered on his 150th birth anniversary. Born on 15 September 1876 at Debanandapur in Bengal, he wrote Devdas, Srikanta, Parineeta, Choritrohin and Pather Dabi, depicting 19th-century rural Bengali society and raising social issues and women's rights. He spent 13 years in Burma (Myanmar) before returning to Calcutta in 1916 to write full time. Pather Dabi (1926) was banned by the British Government of India for its revolutionary theme. He received the Jagattarini Gold Medal from the University of Calcutta and an honorary D.Litt. from the University of Dhaka.
